Miguel Méndez discovered Larimar in 1974 on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range. Natives believed that the stone came from the sea, and they called the gem BlueStone. Miguel took his young daughter's name Larissa and the Spanish word for sea (mar) and formed Larimar, to suggest the colors of the Caribbean Sea where it was found. Only found in the Dominican Republic, Larimar contains hues of white, green, and blue reflecting the islands surround Sea.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is full of history and is a popular travel destination when visiting the OBX. In 1999 the lighthouse was moved 2900 feet to save it from being destroyed by the ocean, a similar fate to over 600 ships off the Hatteras coast. This undertaking was accomplished in just 23 days and all the materials used can be seen in the old keepers quarters, now turned museum. Although the site has been moved it still remains in its the same geological position from when it originally stood. You can climb to the top of the Hatteras Lighthouse today to see the incredible views of Hatteras Island and the surrounding Atlantic ocean. The climb consists of 257 stairs to the top and costs $8 per adult.
